Information about the .tmp (tmp) file type

Below is all the information we have available on file about the .tmp (tmp) file type.

Temporary file. Generic file extension for temporary files.

A temporary file can be generated by almost any application. Typically the application requests a unique name for a temporary file from the operating system, and for this reason it is often impractical to identify the application that generated a particular .tmp file.

Temporary files can be deleted if they are no longer in use. In theory they should be deleted automatically by the software that creates them, but this frequently does not happen. Temporary files are normally created in a designated temporary files folder, but not always.
