A .iso file is based on the ISO 9660 CD-ROM file system standard. The .iso file contains an image of a CD, and most CD writing software will provide the option to burn a CD using a .iso image.

Many CD/DVD drive emulators exist which will also allow you to take a .iso file and mount it so that you can browse the .iso file as though it were mounted in a CD/DVD drive.

Where this is available we would like to include file format information on .iso files, as well as information on how to view or open files of type .iso. If you know of any information which we have missed then please let us know.
