Information about the .conf (conf) file type

Below is all the information we have available on file about the .conf (conf) file type.

Configuration file. A text editable file that contains configuration settings for an application.

The file extension .conf is a generic file extension, in that it can be used to refer to denote configuration settings for a wide range of applications. .conf files are more common on applications that originate on Unix than on Windows (where .ini files would commonly be used instead.)

The following is a far from exhaustive list of .conf files:
AWStats configuration file for a web site.
Apache (web server) configuration file.
Name resolution services configuration file.
Name service switch configuration file.
BSD system startup configuration file.
Apache (web server) virtual hosts configuration file.

Where this is available we would like to include file format information on .conf files, as well as information on how to view or open files of type .conf. If you know of any information which we have missed then please let us know.
